CHULA VISTA MOTEL PROJECT

Crime and disorder in budget motels in Chula Vista, California has been identified by the police department, City and Chamber of Commerce as being particularly problematic: this means that these motels make a large number of calls for service each year. An excessive amount of police time and resources are being used by these businesses. The intent of the research is to diagnose crime problems, understand motel policies and practices, and ascertain the opinions and needs of the motel owners and managers. CSUSB researchers will administer surveys to motel owners and also conduct an environmental review to identify physical and/or situational factors that may be contributing to the concerns of owners. Environmental reviews will examine the physical structure of the motel, the surrounding areas, lighting, landscaping etc. This information will be used by the city to assist problem solving. Through community meetings strategies will be designed to effect change in the areas. Afterward the CSUSB research team will return to evaluate the impact of the strategies. This research is being done in consultation with the Chula Vista Police Department, the Chamber of Commerce, and motel owners.
